An Ayurvedic treatment centre for the mentally disturbed, Poonkudil Mana, offers traditional psychiatric treatment. The Mana is located 6.5km away from Manjeri town at Vallikkapatta in Malappuram district. According to popular belief, Poonkudil Mana goes back to the times of king Vikramaditya. The Mana or home is also associated with Naranathu Bhranthan, a character from Malayalam folklore who pretended to be mad. The mode of treatment followed at Poonkudil Mana is based on hereditary knowledge handed down over generations. The fundamentals of the treatment method followed here are said to be obtained from the Upanishads and the Vedas.
In modern times, the Mana is revered as a place where Ayurvedic medicines are prepared in its authentic form. The Mana provides therapy for outpatients and inpatients. They follow a multi-dimensional method of treatment which includes chanting mantras, tantric rites, the use of conventional Ayurvedic medicines and practical psychology to deliver the best results.
